Join me in congratulating Darrell Garrison, Presid Join me in congratulating Darrell Garrison, President/CEO, on 25 years with Planning Resources Inc., a minority-owned landscape architecture practice.

He Joined PRI as the Assistant Director of Landscape Architecture in 2000. Over the preceding 12 years, he refined his skills as a landscape architect and project manager at M.J. Harrison Associates Ltd. and Davis & Associates, Ltd. In 2002, Darrell and two colleagues initiated an internal buyout of PRI, and in February 2019, he became the sole owner of the firm.
Darrell also serves as the Director of the Landscape Architecture studio, where he oversees design excellence, project quality control, and document coordination. His efforts ensure that PRI’s projects are socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable.

Darrell is a member and former president of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Illinois Chapter, and a past Board Chairperson of the Landscape Architect Registration Board-IL IDFPR. He is also a Certified Playground Safety Inspector. Darrell’s contributions to the field of landscape architecture have provided him with opportunities to share his knowledge as a guest panelist for the University of Chicago’s Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, Urban Development Ambassadors panel discussion. Additionally, he was also a guest panelist for the BlackLAN Juneteenth webinar, “Different Modes of Landscape Architecture” in the Spring of 2024.

The white marble sarcophagus stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C. Since 1921, it has provided a final resting place for one of America’s unidentified World War I service members, and Unknowns from later wars were added in 1958 and 1984.

At age 16, she came across landscape architecture in a college brochure and decided to declare that as her major on a whim. After a semester, she knew she had made the right decision.

After becoming a professional, she is grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in the field while gaining experience in all phases of the landscape design process.

The HARVEST HOMES Phase II Apartment project in Ea The HARVEST HOMES Phase II Apartment project in East Garfield Park is currently in the design development phase. Planning Resources Inc.’s scope of work encompasses landscape design, construction documents, and construction administration services. Acting as a consultant to UrbanWorks Architecture, PRI created a landscape plan for the 50-unit apartment building on a 2-acre site at the intersection of W. Jackson Blvd. and Homan Avenue. Along with the affordable housing units, the complex will feature passive and recreational spaces and a public food hall.

When complete, the immersive outdoor space will include a roof deck patio, a variety of public plazas, a nook garden, a creative play area, barrier-free pathways/walking path, and an engaging water feature that draws you in, inviting community engagement and promoting the creative articulation of landforms and plantings through the site.

The People’s Community Development Association of Chicago (PCDAC) and the NHP Foundation are co-developers. The new development will ensure that long-time residents can continue living in their community.

Village of Oak Park - Dr. Percy Julian Streetscape Village of Oak Park - Dr. Percy Julian Streetscape Open House

The Open House held on April 22 displayed PRI’s findings from Phase I and provided materials for discussion and feedback in Phase II. PRI presented results from community engagement sessions and an online survey. A site analysis of the current street to highlight existing obstacles and opportunities was also shared during the open house.

These insights enabled us to progress to Phase II, which involved using the information gathered to create concepts. We established three pillars: Identity (how the streetscape should look), Narrative (how the story of Dr. Percy Julian should be told), and Site Design (where elements should be placed). Each of these pillars featured three different variations to address these questions. Attendees received stickers to vote for their favorite concept in each pillar and post-its to add additional comments. A large-scale map of the site was also available for attendees to mark. Feedback from the open house will help influence the final design of the streetscape.
