Passion for the Profession
With an initial interest in architectural engineering (structural engineering), Steve began his college career in the Mechanical Engineering curriculum at the University of Illinois, only to find his love and passion for the design of outdoor spaces, landforms, and play environments led him to request a transfer into the Landscape Architecture program. His introductory classes in the program reaffirmed his aspiration to make a positive impact upon the natural and built environment.
Steve is an avid golfer. He began playing golf in the summer of 1963. Steve hails from Princeton, Illinois where he attended Princeton High School where he was the only student to make the golf team all four years. He played first-man on his high school golf team as a senior, (playing with women’s clubs), and graduated from high school at 4’11” and weighed less than 100 lbs. Steve is also an avid Illinois fan, ILL-INI. Additionally, Steve enjoys sports officiating including high school and youth basketball since 1973, and high school football since 2001. Steve has officiated a few DIII basketball games and some semi-professional basketball games. He feels it’s much more fun officiating high school than college or semi-professional.
Steve met the love of his life the first week he began working for the Elk Grove Park District, and has been happily married for more than 37 years, and has been blessed with one fantastic son and daughter-in-law.
